School Journaling: Inauguration
Written for my Written Communication class (assigned subject: the inauguration)
Barack Hussein Obama officially became the 44th president of the United States of America at noon yesterday. So many of us have worked so hard for this for so long, and it’s finally here. All those hours of phone banking, canvassing, and handing out literature really did pay off.
In the days before the election, we all put everything we had into it, and we weren’t even sure this was possible. Surely something would go wrong. A black man, president? Hah. A man with a middle name of Hussein president? Hah. A man who grew up without a male role model, president? Hah.
But Election Day came, and we watched with baited breath as the polls closed, and the votes rolled in. Even as Obama was ahead by over 40 electoral votes, we still felt afraid to hope, we were still sure that something would go wrong. At last, the west coast polls closed, and only seconds later the election was called for our guy. Barack Obama. 44th president of the United States of America. The man with the power, and the will, to bring us change.
Even now, still feeling the afterglow of the inauguration, I’m nervous. Millions of Americans have very high expectations of this man, and millions more are waiting for him to mess up. He has his work cut out for him.
But I believe, at least, that we are finally living in a climate of change. We can make change.
